Data Analyst

We are a Boston-based epidemiology and biomedical research organization. We are actively engaged in several clinical trials, pharmacoepidemiology, chronic disease epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, biostatistical and genomics research. Our research team oversees study data-related activities and quality improvement initiatives to improve the way translational research is conducted and clinical care is delivered. The multi-disciplinary center consists of a highly talented group of biomedical researchers, clinicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, data analysts/programmers, project coordinators, and informatics team with academic affiliations to Harvard Medical School and Boston University. We are looking for candidates with a service-oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of assigned tasks and the ability to solve complex data-related problems.
Project Background:
This role is involved in managing data aspects of large nationwide randomized clinical trials as well as integrating electronic health record (EHR) data with the Million Veteran Program (MVP) data to build cohorts for clinical and genetic research, enabling robust investigation of complex health outcomes in Veterans.
General Statement of Duties:
The Data Analyst will work with the study teams to gather study data requirements, pull all necessary data from electronic health records (EHR), and perform data cleaning, and aggregation/synthesis as appropriate. The Data Analyst will a) generate recruitment lists to the enrollment sites of national clinical trials and perform quality assurance on the data generated, b) develop reports as needed for the Principal Investigator and other project staff as needed, c) perform validation of programs and analytical databases to fulfill specifications and ensure integrity of outcomes, d) turn in assignments in a timely manner, meeting appropriate timelines, e) establish and maintain communication with customers to keep them updated on status of their requests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Mainly responsible for constructing, cleaning, validating, modifying, and analyzing biomedical research data
- Query and extract large-scale EHR and MVP data using SQL
- Generate reports and visualizations using tools such as R and Python to effectively communicate findings
- Collaborate with biostatisticians, clinicians, epidemiologists, data management team and data analysts/programmers to design, create and deliver analytical databases, reports and analyses
- Perform validation of programs and analytical databases to fulfill specifications and ensure integrity of outcomes
- Establish and maintain communication with customers to keep them updated on status of their requests
- Provide statistical expertise towards research projects and conduct statistical analysis using SAS or R
- Proactively identify data issues, troubleshoot problems, and implement solutions with minimal supervision

- Turn in assignments in a timely manner, meeting appropriate timelines.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree in public health domain, statistics, biostatistics or epidemiology, data science, or a related field with 2+ years of statistical programming experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 5+ years of programming experience.
- Strong programming and analytical skills, with demonstrated proficiency in SQL and at least one statistical programming language (R, Python, or SAS)
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including working with relational datasets, managing and structuring large observational datasets, and writing efficient complex SQL queries for data extraction, creating cohorts, data transformation, and analysis.
- Experience in data visualization and reporting using R or Python.
- Basic knowledge of study design and research methodology.
- Capable of working independently in writing analytic plans, performing analyses and writing reports to facilitate research decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to think algorithmically and approach problems with a strong coding and problem-solving mindset.
- Understanding of the healthcare domain, clinical, epidemiologic and/or genomic data, and clinical trials research is a plus.
- Natural Language Processing experience is a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail, logic, and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
The employee must be a resident of Massachusetts upon the start date.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Travel
No travel is required for this position. Optional travel to scientific meetings may occur from time to time.

An employee in this position must complete all appropriate background checks at the time of hire and periodic reappointment.

Pay Range
Minimum $70,000.00, Midpoint $80,000, Maximum $90,000.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
