The New England Aquarium (NEAq) is seeking a Temporary Biologist I to support our Resue and Rehabilitation team at our facility in Quincy. New England Aquarius is a non-profit organization that responds to and rehabilitates stranded sea turtles. NEAq maintains a sea turtle rehabilitation hospital within our Animal Care Center (ACC) in Quincy, Massachusetts. The ACC also houses a modern necropsy lab. The Aquarium's mission is to provide rapid response and humane care to stranded sea turtles and to conduct research and education, ultimately with the intention of releasing rehabilitated animals back to the wild. The Aquarium's Rescue program is one of the oldest in the country, and triages on average 400 sea turtles annually. The Biologist I is responsible for providing care to sea turtles collected through our Rescue Program.
This is a full-time temporary position lasting approximately 6 months. The schedule will be Wednesday – Saturday from 8am – 6:30pm EST. Work must be conducted on-site.
Essential Functions
- Under the direction of the senior staff, organizes daily husbandry and medical treatment plans for hospital patients. Performs exams, gives injections, treats wounds, collects blood samples.
- Provides oversight of the volunteers/interns in daily husbandry activities.
- Under the direction of the senior staff assists with federal reporting obligations, create and update records for all animals assessed through the program and meets reporting deadlines.
- Assists in the upkeep of the rescue/rehab animal care hospital area including but not limited to, coordinating general maintenance, and constructing and maintaining life support systems.
- Under direction of Senior staff places orders for the department.
- Provides scheduled 24-hour rescue hotline coverage.
- Assists with necropsies on deceased sea turtles using the prescribed methods and forms.
- Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Training and Experience
- Bachelor's degree with a focus on biological sciences or veterinary technology preferred.
- 1-3 years experience in sea turtle, strandings, or related field experience required.
- Clinical experience with sea turtles is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- General ability to learn, think and make decisions quickly while multi-tasking.
- General knowledge of biology, anatomy and animal behavior.
- Basic knowledge of animal care and husbandry
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access software.
- Previous exposure to aquariums, or animal care.
- A working understanding of life support systems and equipment.
- A valid driver's license and ability to pass a driving record check required.
