We are seeking a full-time Food Science Technologist to join our team at our facility in Billerica, MA. This position will be responsible for assisting the Vice President, Food Science Innovation, and the Senior Food Science Manager in all aspects of product development, inventory management, document control, and food safety.
This is a great role for an early career candidate who would like to gain experience across a wide variety of areas related to food science: product development, food safety, research & development, production, food tech, ingredient sourcing, shelf-life, testing, etc.
This position works full-time onsite at the Billerica, MA office.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Product Development: Collaborate with other team members on formulation and testing for the purpose of new recipe development and optimization of current recipes for the following categories: ice creams, dairy-free ice creams, smoothies, coffee drinks, cocktails, protein shakes, smoothies, and potentially other cold/frozen beverages.
- Production: Support production staff during large batch production runs. Make small batches of product as needed to be used at demos, events, and for testing the ColdSnap machine.
- Test Kitchen Management: Maintain an organized, clean, and sanitary kitchen environment. Rotate ingredients in a timely manner, keep samples separate from production ingredients, and ensure everything is properly labeled.
- Quality Control: Abide by food safety and quality assurance protocols at the instruction of the Food Safety Manager and put them into practice when working in the test kitchen and batch room.
- Testing & Data Collection: Work with senior team members to prepare test proposals, run tests per proposal guidelines, collect and record test data, and assist with decision making based on test results.
- Document Control: Utilize software programs to create, update, and manage formulations, specifications, and other relevant documentation.
- Nutrition Labeling: Support senior team members with creating and reviewing nutrition panels and ingredient statements.
- Sensory Evaluation: Assist with managing our shelf-life testing system for the determination and verification of product safety and quality. Evaluate products for
- color changes, mouthfeel, and flavor stability. Provide constructive organoleptic feedback on ingredients and prototypes.
- Inventory Management: Support senior team members with sourcing ingredients and supplies needed to meet the changing levels of product demand. Communicate with vendors to request specifications and other ingredient documentation.
- Off-Site Production Coordination: Conduct research into and arrange meetings with offsite co-manufacturers. Travel as needed to conduct trial runs.
Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of food chemistry, food processing, and food microbiology
- Understanding of recipe and/or formula development
- Knowledge of food safety regulations and quality control standards
- Understanding of sensory evaluation techniques for the determination of shelf life
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques and equipment operation
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Detail-oriented and able to work independently
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Prior internship or work experience in a food science-related role is a plus
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite
- Motivated, hard-working, eager to excel, able to take direction and work on a team
Experience/Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, or a related field
- While experience is valued, new graduates with the skills listed above are encouraged to apply.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Must be able to stand/work on your feet for about 4 hours per day.
- Must be able and willing to consume ColdSnap products during taste tests and shelf-life tests.
- This is not a desk job, although desk work is part of the role.
- Must be willing and able to work on-site full-time at our facility in Billerica, MA.
