Position Overview
The Senior Managing Consultant, Specialty Areas is a senior leader within BME Strategies' Management Team and provides high-level strategic oversight across several of the firm's specialized public health practice areas—such as Emergency Preparedness, Substance Use, and other emerging specialty domains. This role reports to the Director of Public Health and ensures that each practice area operates with excellence, consistency, and strategic alignment as BME continues to grow.
This role directly supervises several Managing Consultants who serve as Practice Leads, guiding their strategy development, project execution, staff supervision, and client partnerships. The Senior Managing Consultant ensures strong cross-practice coordination, business development efforts, and helps shape BME's evolving portfolio of public health systems work.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Practice Oversight
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for multiple specialty practice areas, ensuring alignment with firmwide goals, modernization efforts, and equity principles
- Support Managing Consultants in developing and executing strategic visions for their practice areas
- Promote consistency in consulting approaches, methodologies, deliverables, and standards across practice areas
- Identify cross-cutting needs, trends, and opportunities to strengthen BME's consulting services and thought leadership
- Establish and track KPIs for practice performance and growth
- Foster collaboration across practice areas and contribute to firmwide systems improvement and knowledge sharing
Business Development & Growth Strategy
- Partner with Managing Consultants to identify and pursue strategic business development opportunities within and across their specialty areas
- Provide high-level review and guidance on proposals, scopes of work, and budgets
- Support the development of new service lines and expansion into additional states or jurisdictions
- Support annual revenue planning and resource allocation in collaboration with firm leadership
- Represent BME in professional networks, coalitions, conferences, and thought leadership settings
Client Engagement & Project Oversight
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality consulting engagements across supervised practice areas
- Provide senior-level guidance to clients on complex public health issues, systems improvements, and cross-jurisdictional planning
- Serve as a resource for managing escalated client issues, timeline challenges, and interagency coordination
- Support Managing Consultants in contract management, client communication, and quality assurance
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Directly supervise several Managing Consultants who lead specialty practice areas
- Provide coaching, performance management, and professional development to strengthen leadership capacity and technical excellence
- Support recruitment, staffing decisions, and team resourcing in partnership with the Director of Public Health and internal Operations/HR leadership
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning across all supervised practice areas
Organizational Learning & Cross-Practice Integration
- Strengthen internal systems for knowledge capture, documentation, and shared learning
- Lead or contribute to internal initiatives focused on improvement of consulting tools, processes, and training resources
- Support integration of equity, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive practices across all specialty areas and project deliverables
Requirements
Required:
- Master's degree (MPH, MPA, MS, or related field) in public health, emergency preparedness, health systems, or a relevant discipline
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in public health, consulting, or systems-building within government, nonprofit, or professional services settings
- 5+ years of supervisory experience, including overseeing managers or senior consultants
- Demonstrated success leading multiple public health programs, practice areas, or complex portfolios
- Extensive experience managing client relationships and overseeing large-scale public health projects
- Strong understanding of public health infrastructure, modernization, and specialty domains such as emergency preparedness or substance use
- Exceptional communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational execution and detail orientation
- Commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and strengthening local public health systems
Preferred:
- Experience leading or supporting state/local health departments, preparedness coalitions, or public health program areas
- Knowledge of national public health standards such as FPHS, PHAB, and related frameworks
- Experience with proposal strategy, business development, and government contracting
- Familiarity with data tools, performance measurement, and public health operational systems
- Experience supporting organizational change, learning collaboratives, or complex systems improvement initiatives
Working Conditions
- Remote work, with occasional travel to client sites, conferences, or meetings as required
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced consulting environment
Benefits
Expected range is $112,000-$137,000/annually - with annual bonus opportunity, contingent on performance and the achievement of both individual and firm-wide business development goals.
