About The Role
We are seeking an Epidemiologist to support the surveillance, research, and outbreak preparedness and response activities within the Division of Viral Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by performing epidemiologic studies, managing epidemiologic data, and performing statistical/programming coordination activities.
This is a fully remote position; candidates must reside in the United States.
Responsibilities
- Ability to conduct data collection, data management, data cleaning, data visualization and manipulation.
- Conduct epidemiologic studies to advance public health mission.
- Support surveillance systems, including data ingestion, merging, and maintenance of a dashboard with posting to website.
- Assemble, organize, and manage epidemiologic and laboratory data; ensure data quality, accuracy, and completeness.
- Promote data workflow and develop process improvements to support epidemiologic and research activities.
- Communicate with staff at CDC and those at remote sites to ensure compliance with protocol, secure data transfer and processing.
- Attend conference calls with study sites, monthly coordinator/nurse calls or other project calls and record minutes.
- Assist with protocol development and IRB submissions/revisions.
- Perform statistical analyses with a statistical package such as SAS, SPSS, Epi-Info, R, or SUDAAN. Generate tables and figures summarizing epidemiologic analyses suitable for presentation/publication as needed to support team activities.
- Support analytic projects and address key epidemiologic questions using survey and administrative data (e.g., NHANES, MarketScan, iQVIA, Medicare)
- Support development of joint analyses and publications. Co-author scientific papers for publication and presentation at scientific meetings. Experience in selecting the appropriate statistical tests, implementation, and interpreting results for public health research projects.
- Provide input in the day-to-day technical and scientific planning, implementation, and analysis of the medical aspects of scientific research studies conducted by other scientists.
- Generate new hypotheses and develop new concepts, methods, and strategies for obtaining and using data on medical and health risks associated with various scientific public health programs.
- Plan and evaluate extensive, long-range scientific programs and projects targeting critical medical problems.
- Advocates evidence-based policies and public health action and establish ongoing research collaboration with the CIOs, other agencies, and institutions on medical problems/issues
- Provide agency-wide leadership for medical, epidemiological, and scientific activities targeting public health and scientific issues
- Direct integrated planning, execution, and evaluation of public health surveillance and research.
- Provide medical and epidemiological expertise in the design and implementation of complex analytic studies related to a specific medical/public health field.
- Conceive, plan, evaluate, coordinate, and implement activities related to research programs, projects, etc., that will assist in achieving the agency's goals and utilizing information provided by the entire scientific and medical community and other components of the agency.
- Provide consultation on methods in various research activities to serve as a key advisor on the medical and epidemiological aspects of complex scientific studies and evaluation research
- Respond to outbreaks, including providing consultation and epidemiologic support to state and local health departments.

Requirements
Required Experience and Skills
- A minimum of 1 year of experience interpreting and analyzing data in statistical software, such as SAS, R, STATA, SPSS, Python, etc.
- Ability to conduct data collection, data management, data cleaning, data visualization and manipulation.
- Experience in selecting the appropriate statistical tests, implementation, and interpreting results for public health research projects.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced setting.
- Experience working at the CDC or as part of a public health emergency response is a plus.
- Effective organization and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain government clearance.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
Education and Training
- Bachelor's degree in in public health, or any other related and similar degrees. Master's preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
