Job Description: Technician Supervisor
Position Summary;
The technician supervisor is responsible for managing the veterinary technician/assistant staff. This leadership position sets the example for all staff to follow in patient care and client service. The technician supervisor directly oversees both inpatient and outpatient care, working hand-in-hand with veterinarians.
Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following;
Technical Duties, 70%:
Assist veterinarians as directed with diagnostic procedures and the medical, surgical, and therapeutic treatment of animals, including, but not limited to;
o Assist veterinarians with physical exams, appropriate restraint, and client education
o Administer medications, treatments, and vaccines as prescribed by veterinarians
o Perform all diagnostic tests requested by doctors
o Take and record temperature, pulses, respiration, and weight
o Collect and label specimens for culture or microscopic examination
o Perform professional dental cleanings
o Produce radiographs of diagnostic quality through accurate and consistent positioning
o Assist veterinarians in surgery by providing correct equipment and instruments and by assuring that monitoring and support equipment, such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, and breathing apparatus, are in excellent working condition
o Perform induction and monitoring of anesthesia and use anesthesia log in the medical record
o Maintain medical records and hospital logs
o Perform daily rounds with technicians and doctors
o Know emergency procedures, provide emergency resuscitation or perform other life-saving procedures
o Assist veterinarians with humane euthanasia
o Oversee the in-house laboratory, including quality of tests, inventory, and training
o Comply with DEA and OSHA regulations
o Support, respect, and collaborate with veterinarians and all other team members
Administrative Duties, 20%:
o Ensure that client and staff charges are correctly invoiced
o Attend monthly doctor and supervisor meetings
o Prepare work schedules for veterinary technicians/assistants and address staffing shortages by finding coverage or personally covering shifts when required
o Plan and facilitate monthly veterinary technician/assistant department meetings, maintaining accurate records of discussions, action items, and decisions for future reference
Personnel Duties, 10%:
o Assist with developing and implementing a phase-training program for new hires and conduct 30 and 90-day reviews
o Lead in the organization of regular training sessions for technicians and veterinary assistants
o Review the performance and salaries of technicians and veterinary assistants with a quarterly coaching session and written annual review. The practice manager and hospital owner must approve all reviews before being presented to the employee.
o Maintain the confidentiality of salaries, performance reviews, and all other personal information shared by employees
o Ensure that all certified veterinary technicians maintain state licensing requirements annually
o Coordinate internship programs with area schools
o Help maintain and improve an environment of teamwork and respect
Educational Requirements:
o Certified/licensed/registered veterinary technician with current license from state
o Associate’s degree in veterinary technology and/or bachelor’s degree in animal science, or equivalent
Skills Needed:
o Experience supervising and managing people
o Ability to lead others and influence change
o Project a positive attitude of respect and collaboration
Physical Obligations:
o Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
o Endure sitting, standing, and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods
o Demonstrate proficiency in computer systems and Practice Information Management Software (PIMS) by accurately entering and maintaining patient records, medical histories, and prescription information.
o Ability to work efficiently and maintain focus in a fast-paced, noisy environment
o Possess and apply knowledge of safety protocols related to toxins, pharmaceuticals, anesthetic agents, and radiation exposure.

Pay: $24.00 - $27.00 per hour
