Highway Department
Pay Range:
$28 to $38 per hour, based on licenses and qualifications.
Purpose:
Performs a variety of duties of semi-skilled, laboring and equipment operations in the operations of the Highway Department.
Supervision/Supervisory Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Highway Superintendent
Essential Functions
- Mechanical experience is highly preferred.
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled and laboring duties for the department.
- Performs manual labor in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads and sidewalks
- Performs a variety of duties related to snow and ice events including plowing, sanding and shoveling.
- Performs routine maintenance in the repair and maintenance of equipment and tools.
- Removes and/or trims trees
- Assists with maintenance of crosswalks and line paining
- Performs a variety of landscaping duties, including mowing and trimming
- Drives trucks & equipment in plowing, sanding & salting operations.
- Operates light &/or heavy equipment, of high complexity.
- Maintains work areas & equipment in a safe, operable & orderly condition.
Competencies:
- Knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques relative to public roads, snow and ice control and practices.
- Ability to interact with coworkers tactfully and effectively and maintain relations. with the general public in a professional & courteous manner.
- Ability to respond to emergency work during non-working hours
- Follows prescribed safety rules & regulations.
- Ability to work in high pressure situations, as necessary
Education and Experience/Other Requirements
Three years’ experience (Municipal or Construction)
Valid MA Driver’s License
Valid MA Medical Certificate
Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Class B with airbrakes endorsement; Standard transmission endorsement
Hoisting Engineer’s License
Must pass drug and alcohol screening
Mechanic/welding experience helpful
Advanced training relating to equipment maintenance preferred.

Work is outdoors, under varying weather and other conditions. Must be able to: access all areas/levels of construction and excavation sites/ traverse uneven terrain; and enter, exit and operate vehicles.
While performing the duties the employee is required to regularly engage in strenuous physical effort, including: repetitious physical motions; lifting and/or moving 50 pounds or more; operation of heavy and light equipment, vehicles, tools; and moving about all indoor and outdoor work sites efficiently. Must be available to respond to emergencies during evenings, weekend, and holidays.
