Job Overview
The Overnight Civilian Dispatcher position with the Town of Dedham is a 40 hour per week position, working the overnight shift from 11:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. The position performs administrative and technical work dispatching fire and police. Overtime opportunities are available, as is a 7% overnight shift differential.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma, associates, bachelor's degree, or higher.
- One year of professional experience working directly with the public.
- Communications experience is helpful.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (NOTE: PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WHO MEET ONE OR MORE OF THESE CRITERIA.)
- Certification in E-911 systems through the state of Massachusetts.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Certified in police and fire dispatch.
- Certified by the state Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS).
- Completion of the 40 hour APCO Safety Telecommunicator and NG-911 equipment training course upon hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY
- Working knowledge of Dedham and surrounding town's layouts.
- Ability to type and operate computers and digital equipment with efficient speed and accuracy.
- An understanding of the Town's emergency operations.
- Ability to handle crisis and emergency situations while working efficiently and thinking clearly in stressful situations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task and attend to a number of details occurring simultaneously.
- Ability to learn communications systems techniques.
- Ability to read, write and speak English clearly, and give clear directions over the radio and phone.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Receives requests for routine public safety and emergency services.
- Dispatches safety, service, and other appropriate personnel to calls as required and coordinates back-up support activities via radio.
- Determines priorities among calls for service, keeping supervisors aware of priority calls and equipment status.
- Maintains rigorous monitoring of the radio systems.
- Updates police and fire incident reporting on computer-aided dispatch systems and performs data entry on computer to enter service calls.
- Communicates over telephone or radio with other agencies, including but not limited to utility companies, alarm services, ambulance companies, hospitals, and highway departments.
- Participates in various training opportunities, including operation of computer aided dispatch systems.
- Performs related work as requires or as situation dictates.

Pay: $27.34 - $36.50 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 – 50.0 per week
