The role

We're looking for a Software Engineer to join our team. You'll be working on Blockly, which recently found a new home at the Raspberry Pi Foundation. You will work with our team, our partners, and the open source community to implement new features and improve the library. You'll need to have good programming and technical skills, an appetite to learn what you don't know, and a commitment to make a difference for our users. You'll work within a supportive, collaborative, and agile team of fellow Software Engineers.

Responsibilities

Implement features in the Blockly library and plugins, balancing flexibility and backwards compatibility with developer ergonomics
Work with members of the team and open source contributors to deliver high-quality software with measurable impact
Provide courteous and helpful technical support to Blockly developers by answering questions, filing bugs, and triaging issues
Participate in the annual Blockly Summit by speaking about your work and interacting with developers in-person
Improve the accessibility of the Blockly library by following best practices for accessible web development
Ensure compatibility across multiple browsers, OSes, and types of hardware, with a focus on end user experience
Ensure compatibility with web frameworks (e.g. React, Vue, Svelte)

Experience and personal attributes

Demonstrable experience of working as a professional Software Engineer with a focus on web technologies
Experience with TypeScript and at least one web framework technology such as React, Angular, or similar
A proactive, pragmatic, and supportive attitude along with being happy to provide and receive constructive feedback
Interpersonal skills (verbal and written communications), with a collaborative approach to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team
An interest in education, especially around computer science, block-based programming, and/or accessible computing
Experience with block-based programming
Experience with Webpack, or similar build systems

Our recruitment process

Here's what you can expect:

As part of your application, you will be asked to respond to a small number of questions that we will use to screen your eligibility for the role. You will also be asked to provide your resume and a short cover letter.

A small number of candidates will be invited to a phone call with the hiring manager. The purpose of this call is to check our understanding of your application and to answer any questions you have.
We normally have two interviews, at least one of which will take place in-person. Interviews will be with the hiring manager and at least one other colleague.
You will usually be asked to undertake a work-based assessment in advance of your interviews. This will be an opportunity for you to show how you would perform some part of the role. You will be given advance notice and clear instructions.
